Titchener Circles - Ebbinghaus Illusionc

These circles are known as the Ebbinghaus illusion. When you look at the picture, the orange circle on the left looks smaller than the orange circle on the right. However, the orange circles are actually the same size – identical. 

What produces this effect ?
